My last Monday

Day 22

Today was the first day of my last week... or the rest of my life! Nothing especially hard today that made me want to rip my arm off and throw it at someone. I still feel like I got a pretty good workout in too! My triceps are so weak. I feel like all of my muscles are pretty strong and then you get to my triceps... they are like the chihuahua of muscles. (I would say something like teacup poodle, but poodles are mean and my triceps are not) Either way, I can't keep my arms close enough together to do some of the workout correctly so I get a little bit of an altered one. Maybe one day I will be strong and I will get to do tricep workouts with the big kids.

I started looking for ugly clothes that I could revamp and make my own creation. I found exactly one shirt. I only had time to look for about 15 minutes, but I had higher hopes than that. I will look again this weekend hopefully. I have to find some really hideous stuff to Tera-rize. I have faith in myself and the people of DFW who want to get rid of their old junky clothes. I don't always love going to those thrift stores because sometimes there is a bit of an odor there, but it is always a pretty great time find something you can work with for cheap cheap cheap!

This just in-- later this week I am going to the doctor to have my ears cleaned out :) I was jumping rope the other day and discovered that every other time I would jump my ears popped. I am curious to see what a good old fashioned irrigation will find and I must admit I am a little bit excited as well. I really love clean ears and my abnormally small ear canals aren't the best to work with. Little known fun fact approximately 150,000 ears are irrigated in the US each week. I wonder if that is pairs or individual ears. HAHA How in the world do people know this? All you ever wanted to know about ear irrigation.

Tera. The artist?

So my wonderfully talented friend, HBO, and I went to a class at this place called G'nosh. It is pretty much fantastic. They teach the average person (me) with no real artistic ability (again, me) how to create masterpieces with step by step instructions.

Here we are chillin with our super sweet G'nosh aprons. I just came from the gym...obviously.

The whole experience lasted about 3 hours or so. It is a really good "girls night out" or if you are just looking for something different to do or if you want to decorate your house with some impressive art. Speaking of impressive... Here we are working hard on our art.

We had such an amazing time and I would definitely do it again. Mostly because we ended up with such wonderful works of art it just takes my breath away a little bit. HBO is obviously the true artist (pronounced arteest), but I painted my little heart out. A+ for G'nosh.

Work out like a man

Day 19

Today was a pretty good work out. My legs are going to be so strong. Whenever I finish something I didn't think I could I get up and say "I did it!" Kind of corny, but there is a sincerity in that shock. I am really surprising myself every day. I even have some blistery callusy thing going on with my hand when I had to hold some 30 pound dumbbells, squat to the floor and come back up without lifting my heels up... harder than it sounds. I looked over to Z and said "How many do I have to do?" and he just stared at me so I turned back to the mirror and did more. He then said that he would give me a number later. I lost count of how many I did after 40ish. Then he came over and said I had to do 10 more. Those were the fastest/hardest 10 of them all. I couldn't wait to be done.

Ok, so this is the part where I tell you to feel sorry for me and my callusy man hands :) Now I feel like I work out like a man

Not a lot going on on the Spanish front. I don't always know what's going on when I am doing it. The other day I wasn't sure what they were asking me to do. There were two picture and they had pictures...apparently I was supposed to choose the one where they said Hello. This Spanish thing might take a while.

You remember you have arms when you can't move them

Day 17

When they say you don't appreciate something until it's gone I think they were talking about arm function. I had a very hard time buckling my seat belt and shifting gears to drive home. All that I could think about was "If I get in an accident I wonder if knowing your arms can't function is comparable to drinking and driving..."

Oh yeah, so today I did arms. In between our reps we are supposed to do something active for about 45 seconds or so jumping jacks, stationary bikes, push-ups (ha). Z called me over to the back door and said "Tera, you have 15 seconds to sprint to that fire hydrant across the parking lot and back. 1...2" Oh jeez... I didn't even start running yet. The whole time I was running I was thinking about what I would have to do if I didn't make it back in time. Luckily I didn't have to find out or maybe that's why I had to do all those extra chest presses at the end. Actually, those might have come about when I asked if push-ups would make your boobs smaller. :) It definitely made him laugh... probably not entirely appropriate, but how else am I supposed to find out if I don't ask?

I started doing some Spanish lessons on Rosetta Stone the other day. It uses Dynamic Immersion to teach students other languages. It makes perfect sense why this approach would be so successful since this is how I learned my first language and all, but it took me a lot of years to learn English. I am really an immediate results kind of person. I'm not sure what I could do and finish instantly. I guess that's why working hard for something (like my core) makes things a little more interesting.

Here is something that took a lot of time for me to do... it seems so simple, but it took 20 minutes for me to pluck up the courage to go out there (two of those feet are not mine) :)

kick in the throat

Day 16

Today was a beating. There is no other way to put it. Z was out to get us. He was angry because there were several people who came late. There were a few people who showed up late so instead of reading the food we ate from the comfort of the stationary bikes like we usually do we had to read them on the floor in the down push up position. For those of you who don't know what that looks like

Now this may seem like I am being a bit of a wimp, but you try doing this for a few minutes. Oh yeah, did I mention that while we were in this position two more people showed up late and we had to wait for them to get mats and come down to join us... but they forgot their food journals so they had to get back up to go get them and then come back to read. There were about a dozen of us there tonight so we had to wait patiently in the above position for a long long time. It was probably 5-7 minutes, but these were the longest 5-7 minutes of my life. Then we got to enjoy some push-ups. I stopped counting at 200... I know we did more than that though because we switched in between push ups and abs for a long time. Then we stood up and stood like this

Then he let us clap above our heads to the beat of the song for about 5 minutes. Then we had to go down and do squats with our arms outstretched. Next, we combined the clapping to the beat while we held the squat position, but everyone would stop clapping and put their arms down to their sides so every time someone wouldn't squat or stopped clapping our time started over.

These things may seem like they shouldn't be hard to do... they don't even seem that bad writing them, but I challenge someone with my lack of core and strength to attempt them for a couple of minutes. Beating. Serious throat kick tonight. I hope my body will allow me to get out of bed in the morning.

Fancy bindi

Day 15

It felt really awesome to get back to the gym and work out with the group again. I was really looking forward to it. This is why I left work at 4:15 and drove ALL the way home to pick up my clothes when I accidentally forgot them there. I did legs today and it was an excellent workout. I was satisfyingly tired at the end.

My grandparents went to India for a few weeks and before they left we looked up the meaning of the bindi and a few other face markings the Indian women wear. I saw a lady come into my office the other day with 3 dots on her chin... I still don't know what it means and I looked on the internet for an hour. I couldn't just say to her "Yo, lady, tell me what that stuff on your face is." Well, my grandparents found out what it means and then forgot... I'm not too bummed about it though because they brought back my very own pack of bindi's. Obviously, I put one on straight away after I took a shower from working out. (bad decision by the way because it leaves some sticky residue on your face when you take it off)

This is my very own pack of Fancy Bindis

This is me post shower trying on my first bindi

This is my bottle of Matrix Thermal-Active Setting Spray with it's first bindi

Man quilt part deux

Today was a pretty boring day as far as days go. I gave all of the kids back and came home. My awesome grandparents just came home from India a few days ago so I talked to them about their trip... they had a pretty awesome time (pretty fitting since I just said they were awesome). I didn't work out today, but I did hang out with my fantastically fantastic friend HBO... haha this kind of sounds like I was watching TV. No, I don't get HBO the channel. I went to watch the Steelers beat the Jets. No J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets for the super bowl this year.

I do have some pretty great news about my Man quilt. First, it is finished. Second, it is no longer mine. It has a new owner now and he claims to love it. Which I was happy to hear seeing how I put a lot of work into that thing. It actually turned out like I imagined it would.

Here is a picture of me and the man quilt!

This is NB with his new quilt!!!

Saying Goodbye...

NB called me to let me know he loved the man quilt and he used it and it was the only blanket he needed because it was so warm. I feel like I should make a man quilt for myself, but call it something better. I should make a puppy quilt because that's what I really want :) The Great Dane quilt release date TBD.

Here are some pictures NB sent to me right after he got home from work

I am bad luck for pets

Darby's face swelled up and one of her little eyes was almost swollen shut. I was pretty worried about her. We gave her a benadryl and put her in her crate. I woke up this morning at about 6am to check on her. Her poor little face was still swollen so more benadryl. She was almost completely back to normal by 10am. Did I mention sweet Darby is an English Springer Spaniel.

I have really terrible luck the animals in this house. Louis the lizard tried to jump out of his cage once when i was trying to feed him. The dogs were in the room so I think Darby scared him or something. Then there was the time Darby killed a bird in the backyard. There was a plethora of feathers, but no evidence of the bird body... Where did the bird go? Then there was the time someone left the front door open and Callie the Golden Retriever went on an adventure. The neighbor found her and put her back in the house because we were gone all day. I just have really terrible luck with the animals.

I went to a 6th grader's basketball game tonight and it was pretty fantastic. Congratulations to little B for making her very first basket!!! Yay!!

B looking like a diva.

By the way, never ask a 13 year old girl if she plays with her friends... they don't. They "hang out" with their friends when they are 13. (Just thought you would appreciate the advice so you wouldn't make the same mistake I did)

If you haven't seen Despicable Me you absolutely need to. The minions are fantastic and I feel like if I had minions then this is what they would be like. They are hilarious and they work hard... All the good characteristics of a good minion I think

I'm glad I was the big sister

I woke up, took a shower, got ready for work, fed the dogs, let them out and threw the ball for the insane one for a minute and woke up the cousins. Then at 6:30am I left for work. This makes me want to take a nap just writing about it. The girls and I made pizza tonight because we are master chefs! H's pizza was kind of like edible art. B and I made a halfsies pizza.

Big sisters are bossy. I walked upstairs and listened for a few seconds to my girl cousins playing with the younger ones littlest petshops. All I heard was the older one say "I live the city of awesomeville and you live in the city of poopsville." The younger one said "No, I don't want to live in poopsville. I'm not playing if I have to live in poopsville." (These are her toys mind you. HER TOYS!) I started thinking about being younger and if I ever did that to anyone and then I thought about my best friend's little sister. When we were little we played with Barbie's. We had exactly three men Barbies and the rest were girls which was perfect because there were three of us. This worked out find until my best friend's man's head fell off one day. Being the resourceful girls we are we used black electrical tape to put it back on... you could barely even tell :). Ok, you could tell a lot, but that didn't stop us from making the little sister trade so she would have to use it instead. These were HER Barbies by the way. She did it. I felt kind of sorry for her and put tape on my Ken dolls stomach. I am pretty sure my best friend did the same thing, but it wasn't around his neck. Little sisters take a lot of crap from people.

I worked out on the elliptical machine and did some push-ups and obviously worked on my "core". I am also all about the buns now too. I have been doing some good derriere stuff at my class. Tomorrow morning I have to choose if I want to go to work or if I want to go work out. I'm sure I will make a great decision... too bad sleep in wasn't one of my options.

My Aunt and Uncle have two huge TV's in the house and right now I am watching TV sitting on their bed surrounded by cousins and puppy. I wonder where the other dog is...

Adventures in Babysitting

I forgot all about that movie.

I have a feeling it isn't as good as I remember it being

Today was Tera Taxi day. My Aunt and Uncle are in Vegas and I watched their three teenage-ish aged kids. By watched I mean carted to golf, drivers ed and basketball. I'm lucky they are so organized or I don't think I could have done it!! It definitely gives me super respect for people with kids. At one point, two of them had to be picked up from two separate places at the exact same time. Luckily their neighbor is really nice and helped out :) This isn't so much babysitting as it is getting to hang out with my cousins (and they are awesome). Driving them around really hindered my work out as well.

Day 11

This is the first day I couldn't go to my class. I don't think I will be able to make any of the ones tomorrow either. Thank goodness for the elliptical machine in their house and my new found respect for my developing core.

Man quilt part 1

Day 10

I lifted 100 lbs with my legs... accidentally?!? I'm not sure if I should be excited about that or feel like my tree trunks are going to grow roots or something. Today I finished working out and my partner said since we finished early we should run around the building. I totally ran around the building for a while... over-achiever :)

I also have an update on the awesome MAN quilt. The man quilt is for my friend/coworker NB. He is leaving us to go to Iraq and we will miss him very much. He asked if I could make a twin sized quilt for him to take with him. He brought me some army patches to add and I had free reign on that bad boy to design as I saw fit.

I cut over 400 squares for my twin sized little beauty. Khaki and digital cammo with army patches is just what my man quilt needs

There's nothing like working on a quilt for hours at a time :) I really really really want to finish before my friend leaves so I worked double/triple time to finish it right nice. Here is my little set up I had going on. Just hanging out with my sewing machine putting patches on my khaki pieces...

Here is a sweet picture of my sewing extravaganza with the game in the background. I did a lot of that

I put the pieces on the floor to see what my little baby would look like

sleep...

Day 9

I am so unbelievably tired. I am sitting down and intentionally not laying down in my bed for fear of falling asleep mid type. I have been staying up pretty late every night working on the man quilt... Details soon to come :)

We did cardio and abs tonight and I felt really sluggish. Good news... I am starting to feel my core. At least I think it is my core. It's the weak bit in my center that I try to use to lift my legs 6 inches off the floor while I do crunches and all that other ab stuff that just looks messy. When C, our trainer, does it he looks like it is effortless. It makes me want to work harder, but my slow to follow body is not doing as much cooperating as I thought it would. :(

Tomorrow is legs. I am going to show those tree trunks who's boss!

I am definitely going to bed early.

New week... soft hair ;)

Day 8

Today was the first day of my 2nd week. There was a different trainer there today because they switch off every week. He didn't pick on me as much as Z does. I had a really good arms workout. There is only so much you can write about a work-out. I don't really think anyone is interested in knowing how much weight I lifted and the reps and what I ate...

So, I'm not supposed to eat bananas because they have too much sugar and I had one left over from before I started this new workout. I was looking through some books I have and found one about supermarket products or something to that effect. I looked under banana to see what the secret uses of a banana were. The book said I could mix a ripe banana with a ripe avocado, olive oil and lemon oil and put it in your hair and put a shower cap over it for about an hour. It will leave your hair soft and repair dry hair. I put that stuff in there just like it said, but realized I didn't have a shower cap. I panicked a little bit while I racked my brain thinking of what I could use instead. I felt like one of the cartoons with the light bulb over my head

Saran wrap it is...

I wrapped that stuff around my head and I looked like a fool so obviously I took a picture.

I was totally ready for it to smell gross and I was even ready for it to be a mess to get out of my hair. I was not, however, prepared for little bits of banana to be stuck in there and NOT want to come out. It took me about half an hour to get all the banana out of my hair. I guess I should have liquefied that stuff because using chunks was not a good idea. It was pretty awful. After the 4th time washing it or so my hair finally stopped smelling like bananas and it is a lot softer so I guess all in all it was a success. I would love to tell you I am never ever doing this again, but I have a problem where I don't always remember all of the bad things that happen when I do something and I do it again and my memory is immediately fixed, but it is already too late and I am in the middle of doing it again with the same problems as before. Maybe I will at least remember to run it through the blender or something next time.

1 week down

Day 6

This morning we went running. It was very rainy and cool outside today so running was a heap of good. My legs were very cold because of my short pants I had on. Those of you who live up north in the friggin cold would not be able to empathize, but it was not a super good run day out today. I powered through though. As I was passing by Z while making my way back to the studio for the rest of my work out there was a girl ahead of me and he said "Youngin, why is she ahead of you?" and I answered" Well (breath) I think (breath) she is running (breath) faster (breath) than me." He just laughed in response.

What is the deal with running when it is cold outside? Your nose starts running, but you don't have a tissue... What are you supposed to do? I mean honestly, you can't let it flow down your face. That's too gross! You have to use your sweatshirt. Yuck. So now you have a booger sweatshirt. Can you look at that sweatshirt ever again the same way? Is that what you think about every time you attempt to wear it, but get too grossed out so this may be the last time you ever wear it again? Nah, It doesn't really bother me... I think that says even more about me personally. It was a good cardio day all in all. There were only girls in the class today so we did cardio, abs and glutes. He throws in the glutes when it is ladies only... maybe he is trying to say something I'm not sure, but I do appreciate the extra work.

We finished at about 9:00am and I went home. I went over to my brothers house later in the day and we cooked my "cheat" meal for the week. We made some amazing baked ziti and homemade meatballs. I love meatballs! They are tied in first place for my favorite homecooked meal with tortillas. My step-mom and Dad make the most amazing meatballs in the whole wide world and on occasion, my little brother and I try to replicate them. Our meatballs were still yummy, but not quite as good as the "originals".

Here is the picture of my baby bro mixing the meatballs. Very important process. The one and only K-P-Cros would be happy to know that we smelled the meat and everything. :)

Here is a great photo of man pal (NL) and gal pal (HBO) hard at work to create our delicious masterpiece.

Legs.

Day 5

Legs are by far the easiest part of my work out. When you have tree trunks for legs it is a little bit easier then those little chicken legs that barely keep you up. I even did lunges and I don't feel like I am going to be that sore tomorrow.

One thing I was surprised about was the number of exercises there are to work your glutes. I feel like I may be on the buns of steel cover one day if I keep this up. Also, Z showed us how to do the Jane Fonda. It goes a little something like this...

Imagine a man doing that :)

I felt like I got a really good grasp of what I should be doing and I felt like I was doing a good job. We'll will reevaluate tomorrow and I guarantee I won't feel the same way then. Nothing better than a little Saturday morning cardio...

Dot the i's...

Day 4

When you hear someone say now we are going to "dot the i's" you might think about paperwork or handwriting class back in the day, you are wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. Oh, boy, are you wrong. Actually, "dot the i's" is code word for push-ups. Lots and lots of push-ups. Here is actual "dot the i's" proof (girl style)

I walk in to the UBS today with a smile on my face ready for action. I had a good day at work and I was ready to work out. Our trainer is up in front ready to go at 5:45 and is about to ask us to start reading what we ate the day before when in walks a person who is late. 100 push-ups. We had a pretty intense work-out and when 6:45 came around he made us get down on the floor and do 50 more just for kicks. One of the girls who has been there every day this week walked in about this time because she forgot her notebook from the day before. She looked really cute in her boots and sweater and he made her get down on the floor and do the last 25 push-ups with us. She actually did it! Props to her for sure. I am starting to think it wouldn't matter if anyone was late or not... we just do them. Z, the trainer, actually comes up to me and pushes me with his legs while I am doing push-ups because I am not yelling loud enough. Oh, but I didn't fall over. :)

I sound like I don't like any of this, but the truth is I really do. I actually look forward to it. If it weren't for my arms being so absolutely sore and the fact that I am exhausted then it would be super duper awesome. I had trouble blowdrying my hair this morning, taking out my contacts, putting in my earrings, picking up the phone and putting it to my ear at work and pretty much anything else that involved bringing my arms to or near my head.

I am definitely having fun with it. I will enjoy it even more when I am able to wash my face, take off my shirt and wash my hair without grimacing. I have high hopes for next week. Tomorrow is legs... I haven't been super leg sore yet. There's always tomorrow I guess.

Still no core yet...

Day 3

Today was a really good day. Every session has been fantastic in the beginning I am stoked and strong and feel good and then by the end I am so tired. I don't remember ever working out so hard that I physically could not do any more. My body wasn't having it. I got to the car and gave my seat belt the evil eye. For a second, I wished I owned a car with an automatic transmission. Oh yeah, today we did arms. I am going to feel them tomorrow. I got in the shower and tried to wash my hair and it was hard to keep my arms that high.

I talked with some other people in my class and they said they felt that way the whole first week and then it got easier in the second week. I am still super happy to be there and I totally think this is an awesome thing to be doing.

Obviously, this is what I am going for...

I don't think I am ready for that kind of core. This is more like the core I am looking for... It wasn't that long ago either

I'm really glad my core goal has been mapped out :)

I think one of the strangest parts of this class is having to write down everything I eat and read it aloud before each work out. It is good to have that kind of accountability, but I have not done it on a regular basis before. It is really strange how little I eat. I am starting to see some eating habits that will probably be easier to fix now that I can actually see them written down in front of me. I eat a lot more when I get home after work then I do when I am at work. I don't know if I am bored or if I just got into the habit, but that's done.

I am already looking forward to tomorrow... Cardio and abs. Yippee

200 push-ups?!?

Day 2

I have been reduced to a puddle of jello. I am just a mushy lump. That's all that's left of me... Seriously, 200 push-ups. They don't joke around over at the UBS. I went in having high expectations because I didn't have such a great day and then two people were late... Would you like to know what happens when 2 people are late? 200 push-ups. You know what this means? This means the 200 push-ups were not even a part of our real work out! I don't really even think I have to tell you they were girl push-ups. Does it really even matter the style? There were so many of them I can barely even type right now, but that's OK because I am powering through.

We did some good cardio today on stationary bikes and I never knew until today that you can do cardio with the stationary bikes when you are off of them. Trust me, you can... oh you sure can. My legs are going to be super sore tomorrow as are other muscles I never knew I had (my push-up muscle most of all) In between all of this super duper cardio we had some "break time" working on our core. I don't know about you, but I don't have a core. (see awesome before picture below) I lost it somewhere in between the popcorn and the bon-bons I have been eating as I watch a lot of television and do nothing. While this may be a bit of an exaggeration (I don't really know what a bon-bon is) there is certainly some truth to it. I think my new goal is to find my core. I hope it can be done in 4 weeks.

I learned a lot about myself today... I have no core and I can do 200 push-ups.

Monday, January 10, 2011

Body first... then mind?

Today was my very fist day at Ultimate Body Studios(from now on lovingly referred to as UBS) (http://www.friscopersonaltraining.com/) I didn't really know what to expect for my very first day and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised... with the gym and with myself. I did 90 pounds on leg curls and leg extensions. Yay me for being strong. I don't really know my limits or anything yet, but I think I may have discovered one limit very quickly at a red light on my way home. My clutch foot kind of gave out on me a little bit. I had to put it in neutral and take a breather for a second. Don't worry, I am feeling better now in my sweat pants all showered up and ready for bed. I have high hopes for the next 4 weeks at UBS.

I have to write down everything I eat and tell everyone at the beginning of every session. 6 days a week for the next four weeks you can find me at UBS at the 5:45 class. My goal for this is to just feel comfortable... in my skin, in my jeans :)

If you checked out the website and are now wondering why I am only going for 4 weeks instead of 20 weeks then I will tell you it is because of the friggin amazing groupon they offered before Christmas and plus did you not hear about the 90 pounds?!? gosh. Either way, I need a wicked awesome before picture so I can track my UBS transformation. Note to self... take a picture tomorrow (hopefully my legs don't fall off by then)
